Etiquette in the business world somewhat goes unspoken and etiquette can vary depending on the country you are in. For example certain business techniques done in the United States can be completely different than business techniques in Japan.
If you are starting up your own business or work for a company you are expected to follow certain etiquette rules. Here are a few key tips on business etiquette.
Dress the part: Everyday we’re being judged by what we wear. When you’re at work, going for an interview, or doing a business deal you should look the part. Walk in like you already have the job, and your outfit can say exactly that. For men, when you are asked to wear business clothes this generally means a suit with a collared shirt, dress shoes, and a tie. It doesn’t hurt if you do not have a suit, to wear khakis with a collared shirt. For women we have a lot more choices for clothes options but business clothes should include a dress, suit, or skirt and blouse, for us the color is what’s important. Stay away from loud colors, you want to stick to blacks, grays, and navy blue. This is industry standards but if you have your own business, I would say you can make the rules.
Reading is Fundamental: This is an important one, reading is fundamental a saying that we’re taught in elementary school. Make sure if you are doing any business with anyone and you are presented with any contracts, brochures, content of any kind you are reading to understand. If you don’t understand it’s important that you ask questions before you commit to anything. If necessary you can have a lawyer look over any materials to help you understand. As business people you should not be jumping into any commitments without knowing what you are committing to.
Social Media: In the past we did not have to worry about social media when applying for a job or opening a business. In recent years social media is the way of the world, it’s a way for people to connect with you before they even meet you in person. If you are running a business and have a social media page for your business that page should be open to the public not private. You want to drive as many consumers to your page as possible. If your business page is also your personal page, you should make sure you are posting work appropriate material or consider having two separate pages.
These tips are intended to help you in the business world whether you are an owner, or working in the corporate world you want to maintain professional business etiquette wherever you go.
